Jonas Veldhoen
My name is Jonas Veldhoen and I am a PhD Candidate at the Utrecht University School of Law. Within the Fertile Soils consortium, my research focuses on legal instruments for transitioning towards sustainable land management. Governments can enable transitions with land policy, by selling or leasing land to private parties, but also by regulating land use through environmental law. My research project compares these different instruments and how governments can implement them in their land policy.
Mijn naam is Jonas Veldhoen, en sinds september ben ik werkzaam als promovendus bij het departement Rechtsgeleerdheid aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Binnen het Fertile Soils consortium onderzoek ik publiek- en privaatrechtelijke instrumenten voor overheden om de transitie naar duurzaam landschapsbeheer mogelijk te maken. Overheden kunnen via de privaatrechtelijke weg handelen, door bijvoorbeeld gronduitgifte en pacht, maar ook de publiekrechtelijke weg bewandelen via landinrichting. Mijn onderzoeksproject vergelijkt deze instrumenten, en hoe overheden dit in hun grondbeleid kunnen implementeren.
Daphne Martens
Hi! My name is Daphne Martens, and I am a PhD candidate at Wageningen University & Research. My academic background is in human geography and planning, with a focus on tourism, recreation, and heritage studies. As part of the Fertile Soils project, I am involved in Work Package 1: Healthy Environments. Over the coming years, my research will explore the combination of local food and recreation in the countryside, and how these activities can be integrated into the landscape.
Hoi! Mijn naam is Daphne Martens en ik ben een PhD kandidaat aan Wageningen University & Research. Mijn studieachtergrond is in de sociale geografie en planologie, met een specialisatie in toerisme, recreatie en erfgoedstudies. Binnen het Fertile Soils-project ben ik betrokken bij Werkpakket 1: Gezonde Omgevingen. Mijn onderzoek richt zich de komende jaren op de combinatie van lokaal voedsel en recreatie op het platteland en hoe deze activiteiten kunnen worden geïntegreerd in het landschap.
Luke van de Wouw
Hello, my name is Luke van de Wouw (she/her) and I am a PhD candidate at Wageningen University & Research. As part of work package 6, I will focus on the integration of urban-rural relationships through governance processes. Specifically, I am interested in how trust can function as a facilitator to make rural-urban relationships more coherent and sustainable.
Hallo, mijn naam is Luke van de Wouw (zij/haar) en ik ben promovendus aan Wageningen University & Research. Binnen werkpakket 6 zal ik mijn aandacht richten op de integratie van stedelijk-landelijke relaties door middel van bestuurlijke processen. Hierin ben ik met name geïnteresseerd in hoe vertrouwen kan optreden als facilitator om relaties tussen stad en platteland coherenter en duurzamer te maken.
Charlotte Oosterhuis
Ik ben Charlotte Oosterhuis en bij de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen doe ik een PhD onderzoek binnen het Fertile Soils project. Hierbij kijk ik naar de sociaal-culturele relaties tussen het platteland en de stad. Ik heb een bachelor in Sociale Geografie en Planologie en een master in Landscapsgeschiedenis. Iets wat mij aanspreekt in het project, is dat zowel het fysieke landschap als sociaal-culturele aspecten aan bod komen.
My name is Charlotte Oosterhuis and at the University of Groningen I do a PhD research at the Fertile Soils project. My research will be about the socio-cultural relations between countryside and cities. Before I started the PhD I did a bachelor in Human Geography and Urban and Regional Planning, and a master in Landscape history. Something that interests me in the Fertile Soils project is that the physical landscape as well as the socio-cultural landscape will be addressed in the research.
Lara Himpe
Hello, I am Lara Himpe, a PhD candidate for the Fertile Soils project under the supervision of Eveline van Leeuwen and Sol Maria Halleck Vega at the University of Wageningen. Currently I am writing my master thesis, which focuses on the growth dependencies of the welfare state an its systems (e.g. healthcare, education and pensions) and how the monetary system plays a role in this. I argue that a dual-currency system, drawing from alternative theories and practices such as modern monetary theory and complementary currencies, can help break the growth dependency. I hope to deepen my understanding on monetary systems and how it relates to socio-economic challenges when I officially start my PhD in February 2026.
Jesse Lindenhovius
My name is Jesse and I am part of the Cultural Geography unit at the University of Groningen. I have a background in spatial planning and epidemiology, and I want to bring this to the Fertile Soils project. I am working within Work Package 3, with which I will identify bottlenecks and opportunities for old and new initiatives concerning improving the relationships between urban and rural areas.
Ik ben Jesse en ik ben onderdeel van de afdeling Culturele Geografie bij de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Ik heb een achtergrond in ruimtelijke ontwikkeling en epidemiologie, en wil dit ook meenemen naar het Fertile Soils project. Ik werk met Work Package 3, waarmee ik ga kijken waar knelpunten en mogelijkheden zijn voor oude en nieuwe initiatieven rondom het verbeteren van relaties tussen stad en platteland.
Nina Baltus
With a background in Biology (BSc) and Industrial Ecology (MSc) I have developed a deeper understanding of ecosystem functioning and the environmental challenges that arise from human-nature interactions. Within the Fertile Soils program, my research focuses on how the Dutch water system has changed over time and how these changes have affected landscape services such as water storage, flood protection, water quality, and biodiversity. By researching historical development and rural–urban interlinkages, I aim to contribute to strategies for more climate-resilient and nature-based landscape planning.
Met een achtergrond in Biologie (BSc) en Industrial Ecology (MSc) heb ik mij verdiept in het functioneren van ecosystemen en in de duurzaamheidsproblemen die voortkomen uit interacties tussen mens en natuur. Binnen het project Fertile Soils richt mijn onderzoek zich op hoe het Nederlandse watersysteem zich in de loop der tijd heeft ontwikkeld en hoe deze veranderingen invloed hebben op landschapsdiensten zoals waterberging, overstromingsbescherming, waterkwaliteit en biodiversiteit. Door historische dynamieken en de relaties tussen stedelijke en landelijke gebieden te onderzoeken, hoop ik bij te dragen aan strategieën voor klimaatbestendige en natuurinclusieve landschapsplanning.
Kristin Zlatanova-Panova
Within the Fertile Soils project, Kristin will be exploring how socio-cultural relations contribute to more coherent rural-urban spatial relations. She graduated with a Master in Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Luxembourg, and for her thesis she explored the potential of artistic practices to contribute to a post-growth transition. She has worked researching economic risk perceptions resulting from environmental degradation. Kristin has a background in performing arts and has organized cultural events in urban public spaces. Her interests are related to degrowth/post-growth, community economies, and spatial justice.
Binnen het Fertile Soils-project zal Kristin onderzoeken hoe sociaal-culturele relaties kunnen bijdragen aan meer samenhangende ruimtelijke relaties tussen stad en platteland. Zij behaalde een master in Geografie en Ruimtelijke Ordening aan de Universiteit van Luxemburg, waar zij in haar scriptie de mogelijkheden van artistieke praktijken onderzocht om bij te dragen aan een post-groei transitie. Ze heeft onderzoek gedaan naar economische risicopercepties als gevolg van milieuaantasting. Kristin heeft een achtergrond in de podiumkunsten en heeft culturele evenementen georganiseerd in stedelijke openbare ruimtes. Haar interesses liggen bij degrowth/post-growth, gemeenschapseconomieën en ruimtelijke rechtvaardigheid.
